The result of five intense years of research, the famous Cohiba cigar brand is now available in limited quantities in the US market.
Often called "red dot" Cohibas due to the markings on the band, this exquisite cigar offers a medium-bodied flavor and a strong, smooth and incredibly rich character. Handmade with a toothy Cameroon wrapper and aged mixture of Dominican-grown Piloto Cubano tobaccos, Cohiba's blend sets the standard among today's premium cigars.
Cohiba received well-deserved '91' and '92' ratings noting: "Well made with a good draw, Cohiba has a solid core of distinctly nutty flavors that have an underlying creaminess. French peanut notes and a touch of caramel on the finish make this a very tasty medium-bodied smoke."
Note: Cohiba Red Dot has recently undergone a packaging update, and we currently have a mix of new and old packaging. You may receive either, but rest assured, the cigars will be exactly the same.
Today is my 100th review on Cigar Ledger, and while I envision thousands more, blogging every single day about a new cigar since the middle of the summer has not been an easy feat. However, I've pulled it off and made blogging a part of my everyday experience and I wanted to say thank you to all of my readers for making this a fun project to try to get off of the ground. I've had about 25000 visits to my blog over the past three months, and it is really cool to know that people are reading my thoughts on this blog and hopefully getting some great guidance on exactly which sticks to smoke next.
Be on the lookout for a giveaway over the next few days on my Instagram page @cigarledger, as I plan to give away a nice pack of cigars as a way to celebrate my 100th post.
Today, I wanted to celebrate this milestone in the best way I knew how: with a great cigar. The first pricy cigar I ever smoked was a Cohiba, over ten years ago. Cohiba is, for my money, the most recognizable brand in cigars. It seems like everyone knows exactly what a Cohiba is, even if they don't ever touch cigars or tobacco. I get at least a customer a night in the cigar shop come in, bewildered as all hell, and ask me to see the Cohibas. A Cohiba is a token of a celebration in your hand, and I wanted to enjoy one to celebrate today's 100th post.
The Cohiba reviewed for the sake of this blog is the Red Dot. The Red Dot is a relatively new blend from Cohiba that we have been carrying at the store for quite a while, and I wanted to make my 100th post reminiscent of my early days of smoking cigars all those years ago. The Red Dot is a medium body, Cameroon treat that provides a small, subtle natural sweetness with it's wrapper and blend. Cohiba cigars often have amazing draws to them, and this cigar was no different. I was pulling plume after plume of delicious, creamy smoke from this one, and the medium body meant that I was able to puff and puff and puff as often as I wanted to without much power or resistance from this smoke. It was wonderful, but it smoked fast.
Flavors burst from this Red Dot Cohiba, and the most notable flavor might just be the cream. It's a heavy, thick smoke that reminds me of a heavy cream used in baking recipes. There is a nuttiness to the back end of the exhale, and while these are flavors that you will find in many reviews from this cigar, it should be noted that I also caught a bit of citrus fruit in this cigar. I'd liken the entirety of this cigar to a creamsickle, with the orange, cream and light nuttiness forming the classic summertime dessert. Yum.
Intensity did not increase a whole lot throughout the course of this cigar; maybe a touch, but nothing more. This Cohiba maintains its thick, medium flavor and an even burn throughout the entirety of this one. It required no maintenance or touching up, and it burned beautifully. There was never an issue with construction or draw, and craftsmanship is truly what you get with every hefty investment into a Cohiba. This was a fantastic cigar, and while pricy, it will repay you handsomely in the form of being the perfect tool for those special days.
Thanks for hanging out and reading my reviews thus far, everyone. Here's to at least 100 more.
