COLOR PROJECTS are back with a vengeance with this brand new release of GINGER!
It’s been 4½ EXTREMELY long years since the last release of GINGER! In fact, most people have only heard of this cigar. Never even seen one in person....let alone smoked one. Fans of the COLOR PROJECT blends, it’s—as they say—dream come true time!
GINGER is a collaboration project with our friend James Brown (Black Label Trading Company, BLK WKS) at their Oveja Negra factory in Esteli, Nicaragua.
GINGER is a full-bodied, medium-strength 5x52 robusto. Wrapper is a flawless Corojo rosado leaf draped over Nicaraguan binder and filler tobaccos.
Another rare small batch find for me from a good friend of mine (who, as this blog will show, has been taking good care of me and my cigar stock over the past few weeks!) this cigar was the most exciting gift I've gotten lately. Looking at the profile of this cigar, it has a lot of things that I really like yet don't experience too often: it's a Robusto sample, which is always the best for tasting and sampling a cigar; it has a Corojo wrapper, arguably my favorite wrapper to taste from my smokes, and last but not least, it's impossible to find, making it extremely fun to smoke and review. This cigar was incredible from top to bottom, and it is not hard to see why it's worth the price every single time a shipment of these becomes available. Wow.
Rosado Corojo wrappers are, to me, the most delicious wrapper in the entire cigar industry. I always get a hint of wine and woodiness from these fantastic wrappers, and for my palate and my money, nothing is better than a fresh Rosado Corojo wrapper. This cigar, in particular, does not age too long from construction to point of sale, and small batch and boutique distributors internet-wide will have you learn very quickly that these puppies are hard to find for a very good reason. My sample was perfectly rolled and crafted, and the cap fell right off after a quick clip from my razor-sharp Xikar cutter. The draw? Perfect. The taste? Very unique and hard to duplicate, indicative of a master blend and lending a lot of credence to why these Color Project Gingers are so heavily in demand.
This cigar is one of the more complex cigars I have ever smoked. There is a ton to discover from this cigar, starting with cream and sugar and venturing toward coffee and other whole milk. It's a delicious breakfast for the first third or so, before developing into a spicy and nutty blend of (obviously) ginger and cinnamon almonds, toast, vanilla and some leather. Out of all of these flavors, I got heavy doses of dairy in the beginning and the entire spice cupboard venturing into the second third of this cigar. The body intensifies through the life of the cigar, and as the flavors change and some become louder and softer, the Corojo wrapper remains consistent in it's delivery of it's wonderful taste while dancing around with each of these complex flavors put forth by the Ginger.
This cigar is wonderful. I wouldn't call it the strongest cigar on the market, but it does feature some spicy tobacco and the wrapper around it pulls the entire project together to form a medium-full cigar that most intermediate smokers will enjoy. I wouldn't expect most experienced smokers to dislike this one; it's simply a wonderful and powerful blend of excellent tobacco with a wrapper that has a natural fruitiness to it that really helps to make the other flavors pop. This is another case of "see it, buy it" which is going to be easier said than done. There is just not enough of these smokes to build a good collection of them, so I will say this: just like the Stuffed Turkey from yesterday, if you see this cigar somewhere or can search it down online, it is 100% worth the buy. It's delicious, flavorful and just a perfect example of what most boutique or small batch cigars always bring to the table. Try it if possible.
Happy smoking! CB
